Hello! My name is Zachary Robbins and I am an avid hiker and outdoorsy nerd. I am currently 28 years old and was born and raised in Wilmington, NC. I’ve lived in North Carolina my entire life, attended Duke University and currently live in Chapel Hill, NC where I am trying to finish my PhD degree in environmental sciences and engineering at UNC. I first became enamored with the mountains when I was a kid because my parents took us on road trips to areas around Asheville. We also had family reunions every summer in rental cabins in different locations in the Appalachians – TN, NC, WV, and MD. I always loved going on hikes, especially to waterfalls, but surprisingly never backpacked until I was out of college. Since I started graduate school I’ve really got into long, grueling day hikes and backpacking, which coincided with an ever-increasing obsession with outdoor news, lightweight gear, and anything else related to hiking. When I graduate I plan on moving away from the Triangle to try something new, preferably a place closer to mountains.
Site Purpose and Aspirations
I have always wanted to document my travels and hikes with a website/blog because Facebook and Picasa display photos and do not sufficiently tell the whole story. In addition to my personal trip logs, I thought there was a void of blogs in this region that covered backpacking and day hiking in the mountains for people who live in the Triangle area. I thought this site would be useful for people who only know about the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, and state parks but want to see more. Hopefully this blog can aid in the search for the best hikes within 1-3 hours drive from the Triangle, and maybe promote my favorite dinner stops as well.
Origin of the Blog Name
I’m bad with coming up with names for things, I am not the creative type. My old roommate always poked fun at me because I watch a ton of the Discovery Channel survival shows and own a ton of gear, but I mainly stick to long day hikes and some weekend backpacking. One day a year ago after I came home from a particularly tough and long day hike, I described it to my roommate as a pretty extreme hike. He laughed and said I don’t do anything extreme, I don’t do the stuff they do on TV, I should call my exploits “Zach’s Mild Adventures.” I thought it was funny and hardly anyone describes their adventures with the adjective mild, so the phrase stuck with me.
